Mission Statement

Our mission is to glorify God by making disciples of Jesus Christ who love God wholeheartedly, love others sacrificially, and live out the truth of Scripture faithfully.

Faith in Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation, believing he died taking our place for the forgiveness on our sins.

We are committed to proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ, equipping believers through the teaching of God’s Word, fostering Christ-centered worship, nurturing authentic Christian community, and serving our neighbors with compassion and integrity.

Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we seek to see lives transformed, families strengthened, and our community impacted for the glory of God, until Christ returns.

Our History

Eddystone is a rural community located between Grafton and Centreton off of County Road 23. The church is located on 378 Eddystone Rd. in the heart of the hamlet.
First known as Bradley Hollow after the first family to settle the area, Reverend Thomas Garbutt later named it Eddystone, perhaps after a lighthouse in southwest England, according to a history gathered by the church members.

Eddystone Baptist Church began in 1826 as the Haldimand Christian Church and services were first held in a log schoolhouse. The present white frame church was built between 1852 and 1857.  The parsonage was built across the road from the church in 1884 by Mr. Hoyt.  By 1885, the congregation had grown to 80 members, one of the largest of this denomination in the province.

In 1889: Renovations took place.  The inside finished in ash throughout.  A beautiful, paneled ceiling of the same material, with arched sides.  New pews made of ash designed by the Henderson Brothers, Cobourg.  In 1908 the vestry was torn down, rebuilt and the choir alcove built.
In 1924, the church was reorganized under the Baptist Convention of Ontario and Quebec.

From an article in Northumberland Today – Thursday, August 31, 2017

A member since 1950, Arthur Broomfield recalls attending church as a child on chilly mornings before the building was heated with a furnace.
“I used to start the fire here,” he said. There were also changes made to the addition with a larger kitchen, storage area, and pastor’s study.
Broomfield has seen a lot of changes over the years. He was baptized in a nearby creek. In 1985, a well was drilled giving the church its first running water. The church now has a baptismal tank.

Despite the small population of the area, the Eddystone Baptist Church sees an average congregation of about 35 people, said Pastor Bill Thompson. The congregants come from as far as Brighton, Colborne, and Millbrook. Rev. Thompson came to fill the pulpit for a few months on Jan. 1, 2007 and stayed on.

The beautiful atmosphere of the small rural church and Rev. Thompson’s services are likely why people travel from outside the community to attend the church, said Johnson. There are also not many Baptist churches left in the area.
